A widget (Ultimate Social Media Icons Plus) no longer displays on my website www.frankentrikes.com in Firefox 71.0 on Mac OS 10.9.5. It works on all other browsers+phones (incl Firefox).

I have already emptied the cache and done the myriad of other things Firefox recommended trying but it has changed nothing.

I noticed that my Facebook feed is also broken in Firefox, but they claim that it is a permanent break and that there is no fix (for firefox 70.0 and up).

I need this particular widget to work. I am running WordPress 4.9.13

In what way is it broken?

Could you test with the Facebook Container extension disabled, in case that is a factor?

I think I see what is missing on yours, this was in a private window to test whether the standard level of Content Blocking/Tracking Protection could be the problem.

So that leads me to these other standard suggestions:

Double-check content blockers: Extensions that counter ads and tracking may break websites that embed third party content (meaning, from a secondary server).

Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix should provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you may need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

I'm not having any issues with seeing this widget at the top of the page. If I check the shield icon then not much seems to be blocked and also not much in the Web Console.

So that would leave corrupted or outdated files in the disk cache or content blocking extensions.

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Following on from this question.

On our website, we have Checkfront widgets incorporated in lightboxes, https://www.visitzealandia.com/Education under the education programmes.

On Chrome and Explorer they work fairly fine (just one small bug that needs fixing, where clicking the "Close" button rather than the cross gives an error message "No results found"), but in Firefox it does not work at all but comes up with "No results found" straight away.

In safe mode, after deleting cache and cookies, it works fine (or, the same way as in the other browsers), so I'm guessing there's an add-on that stops the third-party server data coming through? I have not downloaded/enabled any add-ons to this computer's Firefox so I'm assuming this is a default add-on to the latest updates.

This will, of course, be quite frustrating for some of our clients/visitors, as they will not be able to book a session when using Firefox.

Is there any way we can solve this through our coding on the website so that the widget will work for your average Firefox user?

Thanks in advance!

Our Facebook feed on our library website: www.floridapubliclibrary.org is also broken. It used to work before Firefox v70.0. This is an issue that needs to be addressed in a Firefox update, not something I change in my personal Firefox settings because I need this FB feed to work for the general public. It works fine in Chrome and Edge.

Hi Library, the Facebook feed loads for me in a regular window -- eventually. It is surprisingly slow to appear.

It is blocked in a private window, to avoid the FB scripts from tracking the user's visit to the site. The user would need to unblock it using the Tracking Protection drop-down if they want that content to appear in the page.

Could still be a problem with the server. Most of the times it loaded normally (i.e fast) and the Network Monitor shows about 5-7 seconds. Only once I saw a finished time of 35 secs, but haven't been able to reproduce even with a "Forget About This Site".

Did you check for possible IPv6 or DNS related issues?

Did you check this in the Network Monitor ?

The reply from jscher2000 was very helpful! It is blocked in a private window, to avoid the FB scripts from tracking the user's visit to the site. The user would need to unblock it using the Tracking Protection drop-down if they want that content to appear in the page."

I have Firefox on privacy mode for staff and patrons at the library and that's why the FB feed was not showing up. Yes, it takes a little time to appear, but the same goes for Edge and Chrome. That's not a problem. The FB feed does show up in a regular window for me as well. That means that with Firefox defaults, our patrons will see it on their personal computers at home. Thank you very much for the information!

This solved the problem. An Add-on, DuckDuck Privacy was blocking the display of my AddThis social media buttons.

I just wanted to let you helpful souls know that what you wrote helped me to trouble shoot this on my own and I have made a milestone in progress. It turns out that I was running an Add On in Firefox called "Facebook Container" that was blocking anything Facebook because apparently even a little Facebook icon puts a tracker on your site that gathers information. Sucky; I didn't know that!

So this was why, in Firefox, my Facebook feed and all the icons were missing, but in Chrome (and Safari) they are present.

Doh! So I disabled the helpful addon and cleared the cache and cookies, but still in Firefox, my website isn't displaying properly.

I am less concerned, however, because now I suspect this is a personal problem. The icons and Facebook feed even show up in Firefox on my phone. If anyone wants to simply verify on their computer that they see the icons at the top when viewing it in Firefox, this is enough for me. The mystery is, for all extents and purposes, solved.

I had a similar problem with AddThis.com social media buttons. They were not displayed in Firefox on my PC but were displayed in other browsers. When I deleted my DuckDuckGo addon the buttons were displayed properly. Do you have any other Firefox addons that disable tracking code?

You can remove all data stored in Firefox for a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox for this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data for that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data for that website will be saved once again.

Hi apage, there are numerous extensions directed at privacy, many of which view social media sharing scripts as a prime culprit for secret data collection. I don't think it's possible to make a comprehensive list of all of them.
