I decided to try Adblock. I disabled it on You Tube but still had problems downloading videos. I disabled Adblock and restarted the computer. Now, even with Adblock disabled, the download button will not work unless I first reload. I have to do this every single time. If I go to another page in You Tube, the same thing happens. I have to reload before I can get a response from the button. Obviously this problem has got something to do with Adblock, but the problem persists even after I disabled the add on. Any clues? A filter problem?

It might not be a problem with Adblock, but a change in Youtube. In the old days, every time you navigated to a new video, Youtube did a full reload of the page. Now, it only replaces a portion of the body of the page and not all video downloaders properly detect that. If you prefer the one you have, see whether there is an update for it.

Open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then click the "gear" button above the list and use "Check for Updates." Any luck?

Or... instead of loading a new video in the same tab, try loading it in a new tab using any of these:

  • Ctrl+click the link
  • right-click > Open Link in New Tab
  • middle-click the link using the mouse scroll wheel

Does the button appear when you do that?

Thank you jscher2000 for your help. I don't know if it's me or the computer (of course we all blame the computer!), but being away an hour or more I have tried loading videos and all seems back to normal. The drop down menu appears immediately I click the button. I think the problem is related to the Adblock and Updated Ad Blocker for Firefox. With Updated AB I could not run videos on Skynews Australia because they were preceded by an ad. (Although no problems on YouTube). But even when I disabled the blocking on Skynews I still had problems. I was advised to try Adblock, but now problems with music videos, which I am very much involved in. For the time being, so I can get some work done I have disabled both ad blockers. And by the way, checked for updates, as you suggested, but nil. Thanks again. I do appreciate the help on Firefox.

You might want to consider using Adblock Plus, which has been around for over 10 years, and is what I consider to be the "original". IMO, the others are wannabees.

And the ABP support forum - http://adblockplus.org/forum/

There was an earlier reply from me to jsher2000 in which I explained that I had disabled Updated Adblock for Firefox and then used (as you advised yesterday) Adblock Plus. When this was enabled I had problems on YouTube - as I've explained in my earlier reply this day (Wednesday) to jsher2000. I am involved in music videos and in the end I decided not to use any ad blockers for the moment so I can get some work done. Maybe the advertisers silently download something into a computer as punishment for not wanting their ads (well, stranger things have happened on the internet!). If you read my earlier missive today you will see I have got the download button working again. But I will investigate this further at a later time. Many thanks for your great help.

Sorry, I didn't recall your other related questions thread about the Updated Ad Blocker extension.

Perhaps I should have asked for a complete list of extensions before commenting, but anyway, it sounds as though you are in a good place at the moment.

Thanks, but besides the YouTube downloads I only have Cool Previews, Lightshot and Fox Clocks enabled at this time, and about 13 extensions disabled. I have checked the ones enabled. I think it is inevitable that you can have a few early problems when you decide to block all ads. My main problem was that I could not get the extension to obey the instruction NOT to block ads on a particular site. And it was this that created problems with downloads and running videos on some news sites. I will try ADBlock again later and will take particular note of any problems that occur. Again many thanks jscher2000 for taking the time to help me. IAN

It is a known issue with the Video DownloadHelper extension that you need to reload the page to get an update of the videos on that page.

I don't know if other download extensions also have this issue.
You would have to check this out yourself.

As I have explained in earlier replies, the problem was related to Adblock Plus, and before that I had yet another problem caused by Updated Ad Blocker. Both ad blockers are now disabled and the computer is operating normally. When I have time I will come back to the ad blockers and try to work out why I am having a problem with them. Many thanks for your interest and help.
