In Thunderbird 60.0 there is no more Calendar!!!

If I try to add Lightning as add on of TB 60.0 I am been told that the version 5.4 is not compatible with version 60.0 !!!

In another pc I see TB 60.0 has Lightning ver. 6.2 but I do not know where download that version!

So how could I have my calendar?

LIghtning is included and enabled in Thunderbird since version 38.

Your best best will be to reinstall from scratch, I can't find the version you mention as a separate file at the usual spots, probably because Thunderbird 60 was released only a few days ago.

In my case, after the upgrade to version 60 (in Ubuntu 18.04), the problem was that the (separated...) package for thunderbird was not pulled... you can solve the problem with

   sudo apt install xul-ext-lightning 

Hope this helps too...

You also must delete previous ligthning extension. Then you probably see the calendar again.

No, it looks like it's really broken, so the "stock" answer is inapplicable here. Someone needs to post a more current version of Lightning to go with the Thunderbird update. I'm seeing a similar issue with the "manually sort folders" extension.

I have linux (mint 18) and Thunderbird 60.2.1 and got it working following this steps:

1. Delete lighning extension 2. Install package: xul-ext-lightning:

sudo apt install xul-ext-lightning

3. Open Thunderbird again and calendar should be there

Ok I have it working again. I didn't combine the two posts, I should have deleted before installing to the system. This post also adds to the confusion:

What also threw me is that the "Calendar" option is disabled on the "View" pane. I was able to make it the Calendar tab visible using the "Events & Tasks" pane.

Well… it may be enough if your language is english.

If you need it in french ( and probably other languages )

These days xul-ext-lighting only provides english version of lightning at least on Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04 & 18.04 ( and I assume on any distro making use of Canonical repositories )

There is a poor workaround by downloading beta but localized version of lightning from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/calendar/lightning/candidates/6.2b6-candidates/build1/linux-x86_64/ and manually installing it through thunderbird.

Well… there might be 2 problems here : 1- https://addons.thunderbird.net/fr/thunderbird/addon/lightning/?src=ss does not provide the latest lightning version. It's still 5.4 instead of 6.2, so not compatible with thunderbird 60 ; 2- Ubuntu's packaging of xul-ext-lightning forgot localization ?

Calendar and Email clients are quite sensitive tools in production / professional areas, how help fixing that issue quicker ?

My implicit question is : why newer and compatible versions of Thunderbird and Lightning are not released altogether at the same time ?

In Official builds of Thunderbird https://www.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/all/ they are. Third-party party packages for Linux distros may be separate.

Ok, so on one side you suggest it's a Ubuntu specific problem.

But then on the other side why on « official » webpage for thunderbirds add-ons, lightning is only version 5.4 and therefore not compatible with actual newer version of Thunderbird ?

It's not the first time this kind of « gap » happens for the last ten years.

I blame nobody here, I'd just like to understand why it is obviously not so easy to have both compatible lightning and thunderbird released and available at the same time ?

→ indeed, that's how it is in Ubuntu.

So using official bundled release builds avoids the potential gap - do I understand right ?

Still why add-ons webpage is late ? And this will be my last question ;-)

You may download the beta but localized version of lightning from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/calendar/lightning/candidates/6.2b6-candidates/build1/linux-x86_64/ and manually installing it through thunderbird.

Or you may not. See this as a temporary help as I don't know if it's safe or reliable in the long run.

For Ubuntu - and its derivatives - users there is a much better method as suggested here : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1074268#c6

tl;dr download the official bundled package of TB 60 from https://www.thunderbird.net/fr/thunderbird/all/ and extract the lightning addon from the downloaded archive. Lightning is {e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}.xpi which is located in ./thunderbird/distribution/extensions

Then install that .xpi file through TB.

This didnt work for Windows 7. Infact I can't get calendar back at all now. When I "removed" the calendar/lightning addon, it removed it completely for good. I uninstalled Thunderbird and reinstalled it and it's not there, nowhere to be found.

Is there some kind of way to manually install the calendar for windows 7? Whatever its missing to run I need it. I've been using Thunderbird since the days of Mozilla Phoenix.

Ok I fixed it on Windows

  1. Backup your Profiles folder and profile.ini
  2. Uninstall thunderbird
  3. Delete the Profiles folder and profile.ini in %appdata%/Thunderbird (make sure you have your backup elsewhere!)
  4. Install thunderbird from scratch
  5. Launch thunderbird and then close it
  6. Go into %appdata%/Thunderbird and copy the extensions folder and any files named extension, put these somewhere else
  7. Now in your backup, delete your extensions folder and all files named extension (doesnt matter the extension on them if its named "extension", delete it or put it elsewhere as a backup) You will have to install your extensions/addons later, hopefully you remember what you have
  8. now grab those copies from that fresh install the extensions folder and extension files you put elsewhere and put them in your backup
  9. copy your backup into %appdata%/Thunderbird
  10. Launch thunderbird, you can now turn on the calendar, its in one of the dropdowns, if it doesnt show up automatically, if it doesnt do this the first time, restart thunderbird once or twice
  11. install any extensions you lost

My windows 7 fix, when calendar disappeared after an update: (this was over a week ago, so i may have locations crossed) Turns out the lightning 6.2 file was in Program Files/Mozilla Thunderbird, whereas tbird was in Program Files/Thunderbird So i copied the file from the old location to where tbird was now, copied the lightning string from extensions.json on a working system, modified it for the failed system. When tbird restarted, it said something was trying to install an add-on, OK'd it, all calendars returned, local and caldav.

 And about 3 hours later - DOH! probably could have just installed the .xpi file once i found it.   So i would suggest trying that first...
