If image files have the wrong file extension then you can rename them.
Try to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
- Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
