On my old imac I always was able to search old trash & sent emails stored on the imac. I could also do the same on my iphone with the same mail account.

Just got a new imac & I setup that mail account & Thunderbird on the new Imac & now seems like all old sent & trash is gone from both the new & old imac... but the iphone still seems to have all the old emails.

How can I get back those old emails on the new imac?

Thanks

Is the account set up as POP or IMAP? If it's IMAP, are the Sent and Trash folders subscribed (right-click the account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe...)?

Thank you for the above advice - it helped a bit. I checked & the old imac is setup as pop & the new imac as IMAP. On the new imac I subscribed & checked box for trash & sent & it did bring back some older emails. Is this the best I can hope for? Should the new imac be changed to be like the old one was, ie POP? Thx

If the old mac is POP, the Sent and Trash folders are only shown on that computer. If you're accessing the account on multiple devices, the account should be IMAP on all of them so that mail is synced with a common source on the mail server. So, I would recommend changing the old mac from POP to IMAP:
