when trying to download mahjong firefox was installed. since then double click doesn't work on my windows xp desktop shortcuts - including ff shortcut. internet explorer doesn't stay open either.

Sounds suspicious. You may want to run some supplemental scans. These two tools are highly regarded:

Have you tried making IE your default browser again? It's under Tool > Internet Options > Programs (or Windows Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs)
