Why is T/B asking for my password when I send a gmail message even tho I am getting my email in my inbox with no trouble?

I seldom send email from Thunderbird, when I tried it just now, it asked for the gmail password. I know that Thunderbird has my correct password because I am receiving my messages with no problem. But I just tried to forward a message and it wouldn't work. Also, I don't remember my gmail password, so I can't reenter it. (I know this is out of the scope of this forum but, I also want to know how I can retrieve my gmail password without changing it.)

There are usually two servers involved. One for getting email (Pop or IMAP) and another for sending (smtp) . They can be different machines using different logins, so Thunderbird stores the login data for each separately. With Gmail in particular, the same login and password is used for both.

Passwords can be stored in Thunderbird under Tools|Options|Security|Passwords->Saved Passwords, but with Gmail it can be complicated by their byzantine security. Have a look there, it may tell you what you need to know.

Otherwise, go to your Google settings on their website and look for guidance on how to change the account password.
