Websites previously identifed as secure (green) now only appear with a grey padlock or no lock at all. Why?

My secure site icon/site identity button seems to have reclassified many sites I visit. My email login now only rates a grey padlock, and even firefox help's homepage only got a grey globe. Even when banking I had to go through multiple pages before getting a secure icon. Sometime hitting the refresh button will change a grey globe to a grey padlock. What's going on, and should I be worried about security? The problem does not seem isolated to a single website. I've already disabled a number of add-ons, but am continuing to experience this problem.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Did this last week after reading up on some others problems - it seemed to get me to grey locks instead of globes everywhere
