i selected ok to download and after this point i have had nothing but problems. ads popup and when i select a link on the page i am viewing it opens multiple tabs of competing pages. Example, i select link in ancestry.com and a link for another genealogy sites opens in another tab. IE does not have the same problems. If there is not a solution i will go back to IE. I hate to do this after 8 years of firefox but may be the only solution.

hello, this was no genuine message from firefox - it sounds like you have installed adware/malware on your system, so please perform all these steps:

  1. reset firefox (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
  2. afterwards go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
  3. also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there (look out for stuff installed recently)
  4. finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes and adwcleaner to make sure that adware isn't present in other places of your system as well.
