what OS? what pictures are you browsing? are these local pictures? what exactly do you mean? what version of Firefox are you using? have you compiled it from source? any plugins? what desktop environment? what window manager? what is your screen resolution?

I would look though about:config

type about:config in the URL bar. it is pretty good tool to fixing just about everything. hit the "i will be careful", search for "image".

You can set the pref browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing to false on the about:config page.
