When I installed Firefox 4 it also installed iBryte, which I did not ask for and is a total pain in the @rse and I can't seem to get rid of it. How do I get rid of it?

I disabled it in Firefox, but it is still active and sits on the task bar and periodically interrupts what I am doing to open useless websites and other stuff I have no interest in. It is not listed in programs so I can't uninstall it. I am thinking the only way to get rid of it is to uninstall Firefox???

Please do the following.

  • In the location bar, type about:config and hit Enter.
  • In the filter at the top, type: keyword.URL
  • Double click it and remove whatever's in there and replace it with http://www.google.com/search?q=
  • Go to File | Exit
  • Restart Firefox, go to the site you want to set as your homepage.
  • Go to Tools | Options | General.
  • Make sure it says "Show My Homepage" in the top dropdown menu.
  • Click the button called "Use Current Pages" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.

The URL to add in "keyword.URL" becomes a link in this post, so right click it and choose "Copy Link Location" to copy it to the Windows clipboard. Then hit CTRL+V to paste it. Saves you having to type the whole thing.

iBryte is a Yahoo app, so remove that in Tools | Add-ons | Extensions as well.

Thanks - that has definitely quietened it down. The icon still appears on the task bar but it seems to go away when prompted to exit, and the annoying interruptions from IE seem to have stopped - thank goodness!
