They can't tell me--Frontier. I was searching the net and had others saying they had the same challenge on the Firefox site. People's answers pointed to malware, they suggested using the freebees. If you read the whole string here, I am the only one with Frontier. There was a leap here and now I am sent back to Frontier. There are others with this challenge and they are not sent to Frontier even though we have the exact same challenge. I just said I had my malware checked through my computer shop and paid $88 and then ran the Frontier security which said no malware. I am at the starting point. Why am I getting this URL while away from my computer. Again, others are getting it and they do not have Frontier. Is their challenge corrected by running the free malware? My computer shop took out all malware before this was happening. Frontier has run their security and the issue is still present. My computer shop has found and corrected a malware that I did have. I have not seen anyone come in and say, yes, the free malware given has solved my problem. It is a common challenge but checking for malware does not get rid of it. Does that make sense? Is it a Firefox challenge since that seems to be the common thread here? Frontier and my computer people cannot solve it running malware software. Thx for the suggestion though

I have the same challenge and my malware has been checked out, but it is still happening. Did you get any resolution with the malware solution? I took mine to the computer shop and they cleaned out a microsoft malware. I run security on the computer at all times that I pay for. It still happens. I thought Firefox was the issue as the thread I found comes in on Firefox, but you say chrome for you. I may start shutting down although that does not seem to matter. It happens in the daytime. Have you found any other information on this?

I am having this issue, too. It's driving me nuts. I scanned with Malware Bytes and Norton. I did find one piece of software on my computer that Google says may be connected: "Update for zip opener" (and apparently it can be under any "update for ........."). I uninstalled it and will see if that stops it, though the pop up seems random as to when it appears, so I don't know how long I'll go before I am confident that it's "cured". If, of course, this solves the issue.

ETA: 7/23/13 So far it's been two days with no pop up. This may have been it! I'll report back in about a week, or if the pop up comes up again.

There are several ways for malware to start running: it may be part of your Windows startup sequence, it could be registered as a service, or it could be embedded in legitimate software.

On the first point, you can review your startup entries using Microsoft's Autoruns utility (Autoruns for Windows) and disable anything that looks suspicious or nonessential.

OK, I will give this a try tomorrow. The other thing I will probably do to get rid of whatever is on my network is change my password even though it is a new long one just given to me by Frontier with the modem. That is their suggestion if I think it does not belong, which I do. Thanks again.

I found a cookie for channel157 in FireFox tools/options/ privacy. Go down the window to "remove individual cookies. I removed that cookie and many others I didn't know I had. Maybe that will help or maybe they will just replace the cookie.

Hi microteck11, it sounds as though the site tricked you into installing something you don't really want. The problem is, determining what it was.

If you check your history from around that time, can you figure out whether you might have downloaded a program?

Also, please check your plugins and extensions and disable any that are nonessential or unrecognized. If in doubt, disable.

Finally, there are many suggestions for malware scanners in the following thread: When I am finished an have shut down Fire Fox, I come back to my computer and I find that Fire Fox is open, and a random URL page is open.

I found a thread on another site dealing with this, apparently it affects all browsers and is caused by something called DSite that is in the task scheduler. I did a search scan on my computer and it had hacked into every users directory, even the backups I have stored on an external hard-drive connected to this new computer. I've deleted these files and the problem went away.

Since I've never had a problem like this with previous computers I can only guess it's something common to the Windows 7 or 8 platforms, my Vista machine doesn't have this problem and my Xp machine (RIP) didn't either.

I think so. I had that one at first but I got rid of the cookie, the very next day another one popped up with a different URL. I haven't had it happen in a couple of days now.

Check you Windows Scheduled Tasks.
Sometime a program, extension, or even virus puts a URL in your Scheduled Tasks. Most of the times they are ads and the issue can be solved by uninstalling the program/extension/virus with the issue.

It looks like my issue was solved. I believe I took out cookies and have not had the issue since. I certainly appreciate all the suggestions here!! I apologize for not replying sooner--while I still knew for sure what I did.

This is a great place to solve problems and I appreciate you all. There are a couple of suggestions I want to look into as well for future reference.

Where do I see my scheduled tasks? I looked in control panel but did not see that. Perhaps another name on Win7?

Oh, and I also disabled some add ons so not sure which one solved the issue.

Hi CarolJoy, you can find Scheduled Tasks here:

Windows 7: Start button > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler

Windows XP: Start button > [All] Programs > Accessories> System Tools > Scheduled Tasks

I had the same problem. I ran the programs that John99 suggested and it got rid of the problem.

This is not just a Firefox problem, I had it with Firefox, then switch to Chrome as my default browser and the problem continued.

I would suggest running the programs John99 suggested and it should remove the issue.

There are many people posting in this thread and all probably have slightly different problems. My post at the top of this thread is probably a good starting point for most of you.

If that fails, read the other posts in the thread, then either start your own thread using /questions/new or consider trying a site that deals specifically with malware problems. hen posting please try to follow the prompts to include troubleshooting information.

It tends to be easier to answer questions in a thread where one person asks a single question and posts system information rather than in a thread with many questions.
