(1) See attached (Tbird - 5 Unread Messages [before].jpg).

Note that the Tbird icon on the Taskbar says '5' (and the Tbird icon in the Notification Area hover popup says '5 Unread Messages' [not shown]). There _are_ 5 unread messages _after_ the (09:01) message that was forwarded automatically by a filter. But there are a _total_ of 13 unread messages (counting the one that was forwarded).

What counts as an 'Unread Message'?

What does the 'yellow sunburst' in front of the 'Subject' field mean?

(2) See attached (Tbird - 2 Unread Messages [after].jpg).

Now both Tbird icons indicate '2 Unread Messages'. But there are actually _16_ unread messages (if that's what the 'yellow sunburst' means) -- counting the 09:01 message that was forwarded by a filter, and NOT counting the 10:06 message that I did read.

What's going on? What's it all mean? Thank you. -mr

That red badge on Thunderbird's icon shows the count for new messages (sunburst ones) like in your case, but its behavious can be changed in Preferences so that it displays the count for all unread (includes old and new unread messages). In Preferences, just type icon options. Click the App Icon Options button that shows up.

Stans -- Thanks for that help!

As you pointed out, the APP ICON is configured to show "Count of NEW messages", but the TRAY ICON (which has no configuration option!?) hover popup says "5 _UNREAD_ Messages".

Can you kick this up to the Development Team so that the TRAY ICON message will report either 'UNREAD' or 'NEW' according to the setting of the APP ICON.

And ... What is the difference between an 'OLD' and a 'NEW' message? or 'UNSEEN' messages???

You could do that yourself by filing a bug here bugzilla.mozilla.org/

From what I've observed and from my own understanding, a NEW message is one that did not exist (was not "seen") on the server the last time Thunderbird checked for new messages, but has since been found or "seen" on the server. I doubt, however, that my understanding matters here, so I'll ask, what do you consider to be a new message when you check your mailbox either via Thunderbird or webmail? When you say, "I just received a new message saying...", what is it exactly that makes you describe that message as new?

Stans -- Thanks for your help. I had used bugzilla before, but forgot about it for this issue.

Question: On web page (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/thunderbird) "Thunderbird Support", there is a link [button] to "Ask the Community". Is there / Should there also be ... a link to (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/) "Welcome to Bugzilla"?
