I upgraded to Windows 10 preview build 14965 and now all desktop shortcuts open as a file instead of a website. Firefox is set as the default browser. If I set IE or Edge to the default browser, shortcuts work as expected. I know this is a preview build and I do expect issues, but I wanted to let Mozilla and the community know so you aren't alone. I am going to set my default browser to IE until MS fixes this issue.

If anyone knows of a fix, pass it on.

I'm not sure what you mean by this:

As a file??

Do you mean that when you go to the site, it is not displayed properly?

Load the web page. Then holding down the <Shift> key, reload the page.

Let me see if I can help clarify:

Since the new Insider build, if you create a shortcut to a web address in Windows (e.g. right-click on desktop, new, shortcut, www.firefox.com)

..when you click on the shortcut, Firefox browser window opens the "locally saved" copy of the web page in the firefox window instead of displaying the website itself.

-- If I change the default browser over to Internet Explorer, the same shortcut created above works normally to visit the shortcut's website.

-- if I change the default browser back to Firefox, same undesired behavior.

ATTACHED is a graphic which demonstrates what I describe. The Address bar should say "htto://www.firefox.com" and not refer to some object on my local "C" drive.

Obviously this may be a windows problem in how it communicates the request to firefox..

That's strange. It seems to be opening a page in IE's cache rather than Firefox's own cache.

(I've never used the method you're describing to create a URL-style shortcut, but it works on Windows 7, and presumably it worked for you on earlier releases of Windows 10.)

I'm not sure how to diagnose what is happening without hands on access.

Do you have any other browsers installed that you could test as default browser, besides IE and Edge?

It might be a question for one of Microsoft's forums if it affects all third party browsers.

Hi. It is very like a Windows problem, of course. I posted about it here because I'm OCD and hate to entertain a bug, even if only until the next win build.

It cleRly has something to do with how and what data Windows passes to the browser when a shottut is launched.

Another way to see this is to bring up a website in Firefox and then drag the site from the address bar to be desktop - thus creating a shortcut.

On my Win 7, I have noticed that a shortcut created by one browser sometimes dosen't work in another.

This behavior has continued in v14986 and v15002.
