After I changed my Microsoft password Thunderbird reported that it could not access my mail and prompted me for another password which I gave. No success. I restarted Thunderbird and tried again. No success. I restarted my computer, no success. I removed my account from Thunderbird, restarted the computer and installed the account again, using the new password of course. Thunderbird kept reporting that the password is not correct. I chatted long with the Microsoft helpdesk and they checked an approved that I used the correct server settings. I can check my mail easily in Outlook using the new password, but Thunderbird does not accept my hotmail account anymore. Please help.....

Have you created an application password for use in Thunderbird. If not I suggest you get over to outlook.com and get one. Then use it in Thunderbird.,

Have you deleted the old password in Thunderbird?

Thank yoy for your response. Yes, i deleted the data from the list of passwords

Are you using the server name and settings as mentioned here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-hotmail

more options

Again thanks. Before I changed the password I made a screenshot of all the server settings. This is available for you of course. It comlies 100% with the settings in your link. After changing the password for mu Microsoftaccount (and removal of the password in the list) I used exactly the same settings plus the new password. Response of Thunderbird: wrong password. After trying various other settings (among which the automatically generated settings because I am using also Office365) I called the Microsoft helpdesk and had a very long chat during which various settings were tried, among which the two that I described above. Result is still very disappointing. Microsoft recommended of course to start using Outlook but I want Thunderbird (I have about 10 email accounts). Tomorrow I will see a friend who is using Thunderbird. I will try to make my account in his program and see whether it works there. I have the impression that my Thunderbird remembers my old password (which does not work either, because I tried this also of course). I appreciate your help very much. Peter

Do you have Norton's, or another anti virus product that saves your passwords and happily offers up the old changed password afterwards. AS disconcerting as it sounds, password vault products are quite good at offering passwords for you that are incorrect.

Thank you Matt. I am just using Windows Defender, no other virus program

Just tried Thunderbird using my friend's computers. Result: wrong password! So I am not able to make an account of my emailaddress using my new password in my friend's Thunderbird! My conclusion is that the problem is not in my computer. Note that Thunderbird is suggesting other (Microsoft Office) servers when i try to make my account than is suggested by Microsoft (imap-mail.outlook.com and smtp-mail.outlook.com). My hotmail account in Thunderbird with my old password used these servers. Hope this test helps solving the problem.............

Is the fourth section of this article -- "Outlook.com IMAP connection errors" -- relevant:

Does Outlook.com account require an "app password" for Thunderbird? This is a long scramble of stuff you use instead of your regular login when your account has increased security settings such as two-factor authentication.

thank you! This may help because together with changing my password I introduces two step authentication................. I checked the link you gave and found a lot of sessions. Unfortunately all in Dutch.....sorry, so I don't know exactly what the English version says. Under 'session type' In the column 'Time' I can see Protocol: IMAP IP: 2001:1c03:3c01:9700:ddfc:18a3:ad81:3794 and my account alias . Under 'session type' I see the time, again my account alias but the most important one: registration completed (in Dutch: aanmelden voltooid'. As far as I can see this is the same for all sessions. I can't find any possibility to put: 'This was me'. Maybe the problem is solved if I skip the two step authentication for outlook? How am I going to do that?

Hi Peter, I don't know anything more than what Microsoft help pages tell me about the two-factor authentication. I haven't set it up on my own account (yet).

Your suggestion was very hopeful. I managed to switch my two step authentication off (via Microsoft Security settings and logging in with my new password). Tried again to make my account in Thunderbird but again it reports: configuartion cannot be verified: wrong password or user name. Sorry...................

Hello Matt,

IT WORKS!!!

Like I said before, I switched off my two step authentication and tried to add my account to Thunderbird but it failed. There is no option to create an app password. I switched on my two step authentication again and the the option to choose an app password appeared. Using this password in my Thunderbird was immediately succesful............

Can I suggest making clear Thunderbird instructions?

Anyway, thank you so much for your help. You salvaged a very loyal Thunderbird user.........

Peter
