how do I open a large directory of bookmarks without loading all the tabs?

I have saved a session with 700+ bookmarks. If I reload that session it loads all the tabs at once and crashes Firefox

I noticed that when I load a session it doesn't reload all the tabs at once, so that would be usefull in this case because I want to preferentially browse tabs and only load the ones I need clicking on them (it's harder doing that opening the bookmarks tree each time)

Use the offline mode. That will not do exactly what you want but it may well prevent crashes and open the tabs, in Firefox without it crashing.

It may also be an idea to try to split the folders of 700 bookmarks in to sub folders of fewer bookmarks. Once you have the tabs open then as you have noticed Firefox defaults to loading only the displayed tabs immediately on restart.

If you use different sets of bookmarks for different purposes and projects maybe consider splitting up your projects and using different Firefox profiles for each project. If your Computer had large amounts of RAM you may wish to consider using 64bit Firefox, but that will not allow most of your Plugins. You are able to install both Fx32bit and Fx64bit. Using additional profiles should help with your session store corruption issues.

To open the Bookmarks Manager, press the Alt or F10 key bring up the tool bar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Just call the bookmarks you need.

I asked how to I load a bunch of bookmarks into tabs w/o loading all of them except perhaps the selected tab like when restoring session

The functionality is there just isn't implemented for this situation or there's a hidden way to use it

It's not urgent but it's linked to how firefox crashes when having too many tabs in a session. Also the session file gets corrupted (happened to me)

Thank you. That offline trick may be the solution which I'm not gonna test b/c it messes up my session when it crashes and I had enough cold sweat for today :D

The offline option should not mess up anything. Or at least not immediately. Set Firefox offline open the bookmarks. Most will fail to load properly but they will have a placeholder tab. Then set Firefox back to online operation. I could forsee a problem though as the number of open and fully loaded tabs increases, but there is a danger of problems if you use lots of tabs then try to open another 700.

Linux and Macs have had 64 bit Firefox for years, and tend to be able to handle lots of tabs better than a Firefox 32 bit version will.

You could submit crash reports then ask about them, but I suspect you may just be expecting too much from Firefox, especially a 32bit version.

It would've been easier if lazy loading was implemented as default tab loading procedure, and a lot more resource friendly and causing less crashes

I don't know if this will work for you; Load Tab on select {web link} Stops background tabs from loading until you select them.

Options - General - Tabs: check "Don't load tabs until selected."

The subfolders option is also good.
