I backed up my book marks and saved the json file on my desktop. I went to open it and and it wouldn't. I right clicked "Open With" and it defaulted to a PDF. I chose that and it still wouldn't open. I deleted the PDF file and rebacked up the json file. Now it defaults to a PDF file all the time. How to I change it so I can save the back up json file to its original format?

Bookmark backups are restored from the same place you create them: the Library.

  1. Click the Bookmarks button on the toolbar and choose Show All Bookmarks.
  2. Click the Import and Backup button.
  3. Click the Restore submenu.
  4. Click the Choose File menu item, then pick the file you saved manually earlier.

You can't open a JSON backup via Windows Explorer. The only thing that would work would be to open the file in a text editor, but the file is one long line without line breaks and is not human readable as it is in JavaScript object format. See the above posted steps to restore bookmarks stored in the file in the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.
