Memory issues with version 78.x.x
Hello.
I'm using Thunderbird for many years. After a recent upgrade from version 68.x.x to 78.x.x the application crashes when reading some advertsing mails that contain many pictures. With oldest versions the mail opened immediatly, and pictures seemed to be loaded while scrolling. With last versions, the window stucks, displaying that it's loading the message. I've tried to switch from the 32 bits version to 64 bits one, but it doesn't change anything. I can observe that my consumed memory when Thunderbird is started is about 1.2 GB, and just after opening such a mail, it reaches almost 4 GB which is my total installed memory. Three times of four, the application crashes, or the main windows disappears and lets a zombie process with almost all the allocated memory...
An idea ? Thanks.
Regards.

This is on Windows 10? Please post your crash IDs here in the topic. They are listed at Help > Troubleshooting.
This computer is still on Windows 7.
I have no available crash IDs after uninstalling the 3 bits version for th 64 bits one.
Oldest are : bp-80ed7d7e-7253-4349-8441-664050201001 bp-cbaede41-4b38-4e05-91ea-41b510200930 bp-3b4f5bb0-9fd4-4666-855d-054780200926 bp-bd065fa9-9a4d-4bc2-a63a-a2f050200926 bp-9906b00a-16d2-46ee-8d5f-f35240200925 bp-e8820497-121b-4c41-96e9-21f6d0200917 bp-42f7293a-6088-4a45-ab3f-01b500191109 bp-e67f3cc7-d8a3-471d-a5ff-98e670171217
I've also observed that the same kind of mails leads the application to produce a lot of hard drive accesses (100% of IO capacity)... FYI, cache is disabled in my options.
How can I join a copy of a message that took almost 10 minutes to load, without crashing this time ? I hope you could reproduce memory and IO behavior.
Thanks again.
Hello.
This moring I've seen that a new version was available, and upgraded to 78.3.3.
When I clicked on the "release notes" link (to check if my problem was in the fixes list), I observed a similar behavior, just opening the new tab to display the page : memory and IO saturation.
Threads count, just after restarting and opening the release notes page reached 64 : perhaps too much pressure on the computer ?
I attach a screen shot of the process state.
I hope this can help...

Hello there P.maseres. We have read your message we try to help you.

It could be the ram memory causes crashes? Do You ve got questions? It should be in your system. How much there is onboard of your computer machine. A normal machine has 16gb.
A shortage of these does indeed cause such symptoms but this should be due to the volume of your ram number at the time and the contents of your computer.
What about the content of your inbox and sub folders, the amount of stored content on it, is this reasonable or do you have too many inboxes of messages etc?
Both recommend moving this to custom subfolders. This is possible.

Hello.
Thanks for your answer.
My personal computer has only 4 GB of RAM : this is not much (my professional PC has 16 GB and sometimes it's not enough to do my job), but for reading messages and few web pages, it's still enoughThu.
With Thunderbird 68.x, I as able to read the same messages with the same kind of content, and the same number of pictures : no memory issues, no IO saturation. The problem came with 78.x : it seems that the loading mode has changed between the old version and the last one, with more parallelism, leading to high memory allocation and IO level at 100%.
I've seen a parameter (not in the common page) : "image.multithreaded_decoding.limit" with value "-1". Does it represent the concurrent threads (-1 =?= no limit) that are allowed to load images ? Is this parameter new, and can it explain y new problems ?
Thanks again.
I've tried tuning the parameter "image.multithreaded_decoding.limit", setting low values like 4, and it doesn't change anything. I've also been looking for other parameters whose name may be related to performance behavior, but none has make the same kind of messages content readable. It's important to say that almost all my messages are read without problems, and that mails from a same web vendor almost always make Thunderbird "explose" my computer resources. I'd like to transfer you some copies of such messages to check if you can read their content. Once more, with 68.x the same messages with a lot of pictures were displayed without any problem... Thanks.
Hello there P.maseres.
The topic could be different according to the kind of ram you have installed.
The environment around your io situation, your mouse network card or other assortments may also be outdated or need to be replaced?
Once the report has arrived, the situation will prescribe itself.
In this case the input/ output system.
It is due to Thunderbird software because the x version of 78 is installed. The chance is very small.

Hello. I have no doubt at all about the HTMLmail rendering enginethat has changed between Thunderbird versions. I was able to display messages that I usually receive twice a day, and suddenly it fails just after installing the version 78. It was working at 07:00 with version 68, and failing at 08:00, just after the upgrade. I can read the same messages I'm used to read with Thunderbird for years, mails with their many images, in GMail, using last Chrome or last Firefox at the same time, and it takes hardly 500 MB of my PC's memory. I know that we all can make a bad diagnostic, but I work in IT and computers for more than 38 years, and I think I have a little idea of how a software works... Perhaps you could give me a way to send you a copy of some messages contents that always lead Thunderbird to the same behavior... I'm sure this can help. Thanks again. Regards.
Hello there P.maseres.
Is there a question that each mail you want to open takes up a reach of 4 GB per single mail.
do you use an online status or do you work offline for this?
The limit size for maps is around 4 gb in Thunderbird.
Could it be about a bug? I think it would probably be the slower running of a PC or other piece of software. Nothing to do with Thunderbird s software?
Try to run it in safe modus. Oké please send me.

I sent you a private message asking you to forward one of the messages that causes a crash.
Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win7 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17419/windows-7-advanced-startup-options-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird Does problem go away?
Do you have Windows set to manage the paging file, or have you limited the paging file manually? (Windows advanced settings, performance tab)
Hello. I've already tried in safe mode but it produces the same behavior. The messages that produce failures are not so big (between 1 and 2 MB I think). But when I look at the source code of some of them I can see that the HTML part contains more than 1500 "
Hello there P.maseres.
The limit size of a normal email contains 102 kb.(gmail). After having more the automatic clipping system is on. Send me a pictures of your HTML codes to us please? And messages.
Others might have a limit that will automatically trigger Spamfilter with a content of more than 100 filters. You Could Have Been Spammed?
how are the security environments at your place? The performance of the hardware is this good with the rest?

Hello День сумо.
I've already sent 2 mails (full source) to Wayne Mery. Wayne has be able to reproduce the exceeding memory allocation during the images rendering on its own computer, and I guess he has created a bug report with the needed description and the two mails attached.
If you need it, I can send them again, by mail, but copying the full source here will not be very useful...
These mails that I usually receive almost twice a day are some kind of exception : they contain between 1000 and 1500 images tags (this seems a big number, but advertising mails usually carry a lot of images). The same mails were displayed almost immediately with TB 68.x, and without any visible resource (memory, IO, and so on). At the opposite, TB 78.x fails to render the content, and allocate an excessive memory, and that leads any PC to swap, or to crash (the 32 bits version crashes : see crash IDs)...
I have not the bug report ID to follow it and add comment if needed...
Thanks for your help.
Regards.
