Hardware configuration is limiting version update of Adobe Acrobat plugin. Adobe minimum requirements will not allow Reader X to run on old machine. Plugin checker not taking this into account. Should it?

Here are the requirements from Adobe:

* Intel® 1.3GHz or faster processor

   * Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, Professional, or Tablet PC Edition with Service Pack 3 (32 bit) or Service Pack 2 (64 bit); Windows Server® 2003 (with Service Pack 2 for 64 bit; Windows Server® 2008 (32 bit and 64 bit); Windows Server 2008 R2 (32 bit and 64 bit); Windows Vista® Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 2 (32 bit and 64 bit); Microsoft Windows 7 Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise (32 bit and 64 bit)
   * 256MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
   * 260MB of available hard-disk space
   * 1024x576 screen resolution
   * Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or 8; Mozilla Firefox 3.5 or 3.6
   * Video hardware acceleration (optional)

I think processor speed and memory would be the culprit.

The plugin checker says outdated but there is no update supporting the old hardware. So is the Plugin Checker wrong for my configuration?

Seems as if Adobe will go by the wayside in my future on this machine and I know others will hit the same wall.

BTW Firefox is running great!

No, it doesn't interrogate for hardware specs when determining whether an update for plugins is due.

Should it?

History; Plugin Checker Article on WebDev

BTW after a two hour download from Adobe of Reader X by the Adobe DLM the installer says no way! Bad Burn...

I am hoping to save a lot of time and resources for many users. Needless to say the time wasted on "UNKNOWN PLUGIN" research ie. Google Update and Windows Presentation Foundation.

The Plugin Checker site could give better resolutions than Searches...

  • Plugin supported by Application Link(s)
  • Knowledge base referrals maybe?
  • Another option is to submit data to Mozilla on the UNKNOWNS for statistical analysis to prioritize solutions and knowledge...

After some careful consideration:

Firefox Help: Using the Adobe Reader plugin with Firefox

Knowledge Base: MozillaZine | Adobe Reader

There is a new version of Adobe Reader called Reader X.

Because of the Hardware requirements I will remain with Adober Reader 9.

The Acrobat plugin version is maintained by Adobe Reader's Update Check routine. The version of Adobe Reader 9 is supported by Adobe with security releases.

Reference: Adobe Security bulletins and advisories

So the plugin checker is in error when it recommends an update to the plugin.

Recommendation:

It should say plugin is up to date and new App version is available.
