The location bar where the internet address is housed I can no longer type in for instance "universities" and I will go to a Google search for names of items with "universities" now it just comes up with some weird page or an actual webpage if I get the name right. I would like to just use the location bar for a search

It is best to use the search bar to search or use a one letter keyword search to do searches via the location bar.
You can add a keyword to a search engine via Manage Search Engines in the search bar or you can create bookmarks for this purpose.

With a keyword search then you know that Firefox will perform a search with the chosen search engine which otherwise only will happen if you enter multiple search terms.

Well, if you'll remember, the "location bar" is actually the "Awesome Bar"! It's not called the Awesome Bar for no reason; it really is awesome.

Yes, you can use it to search on a search engine. Just type about:config into the Awesome Bar. Click "I'll be careful, I promise!". In the config menu's search box, look for browser.search.defaultenginename. Right-click on it, and then select "Modify". Type "Google" (or whatever search engine you use) into the prompt box. Try out your Awesome Bar!
