So my adobe flash plugin apparently keeps crashing and this has been going on for awhile now. When I watch videos on youtube, the audio will stutter. Sometimes the video will crash too and whenever I watch a video on teennick.com, the video is constantly freezing and/or crashing. I've tried using the 'safe mode" version of firefox and the problem still happens. This is so frustrating, someone please help.

acidhead, Thanks for reporting your solution to Flash lockups, which included reinstalling the Flash plugin after first doing a complete uninstall, including manual removal of leftover Flash files and folders.

For the benefit of others reading, Adobe includes instructions for uninstalling Flash on Windows in their own help article (linked from the Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems Firefox article) which is:

Hi TheMightyPhoenix, Flash 10.0.45.2 received numerous security updates up to Flash 10.3.183.90 earlier this year. If you are going to avoid Flash 11, you may want to get the latest version in the 10.x series to avoid being an easy mark for older Flash-based malware. (Still, 10.3.183.90 may have problems that aren't being fixed.)

thank you jscher2000. I just watched a video where someone is creating a mms.cfg inside the flash 11 folder and inside the file he types AutoUpdateDisable=1, silentAutoUpdateEnable=0, ProtectMode=0. And he say that it works, but does this mean that he is disabling the autoprotect? If so that makes flash 11 worst than 10.3

Hi TheMightyPhoenix, the Protected Mode feature of Flash 11.3+ splits up Flash media (and some individual components of Flash media) into separate processes for improved isolation, which guards against some attacks that otherwise could cross between different Flash media or components. I don't know whether that additional protection was developed in response to any real-world threats, or is more of a theoretical advantage. However, Flash is updated at least monthly to address know vulnerabilities, so if possible, it's best to run the latest version, even if you don't take advantage of all the security features.

Hi cecc, normally after you have submitted the crash reports, the crash IDs change so they start with bp- . Could you click the links on the about:crashes page and see whether that submits/converts them?

From today :( On Windows 7 x64 This is happening all the time since a few months ago.

Hi bingre, your crash reports show you have Windows 7 and the Flash Player protected mode is enabled. Disable it using the method described in this Adobe support article under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox? For more step-by-step instructions, see also: this post.

Please report back on degree of progress making that change and exiting/restarting Firefox.

Thank you, jscher2000! So far so good and I guess it will work fine from now on.

Thank you, once again!

I have also had this problem for months. Tried updating Firefox and Adobe Flash but that never fixed it. Wanted to watch HBO-GO tonight, but all I could get was a black screen. Installed Chrome as another poster had suggested and not one glitch with my movie. In the past, every time I paused a movie in HBO-GO I would get a message that Adobe crashed, but no problems tonight with Chrome.

Hi Cactus74, this is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with the Flash Player plugin. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:

(1) If you have any recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media make sure they are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them temporarily.

(2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash

(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"

(B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

(3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista and higher)

See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

Any luck?

Hi sunseeker007, in order for the forum volunteers to read the crash data, you need to click through some of those IDs and make sure they are submitted to the server. You'll either see the IDs change so they start with bp- (you can paste those here), or you can give us the addresses of the crash data pages on the crash-stats server.

me too! i have windows 8, using classic shell. i have not been able to use firefox WITHOUT it crashing because of shockwave. problems seem worse when using pandora, or watching videos on youtube. i have researched solutions and tried updating firefox AND schockwave to no avail.

Hi nonsaya, can you remind me what "classic shell" is?

Meanwhile, you mentioned updating, but please also try the steps in this post further up this page: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../968190?page=5#answer-508032.

i have no idea how to do any of that. i clicked on one ID, and couldn't tell if it was uploaded or not. classic shell is for windows 8 because windows 8 is its own nightmare.

Hi nonsaya, when you click a link, you should eventually get a crash report page. You can copy the address of that page and paste it into a reply.

So is Classic Shell this specifically: http://www.classicshell.net/

Regarding the Flash suggestions, please see the steps in the post I linked to.

classic shell, yep that's it. here's one, is this what you need? if so, i will retrieve others:

Hi nonsaya, thank you for that.

A common problem on Windows Vista and higher is incompatibility with the protected mode feature of the Flash Player plugin. I recommend disabling it.

See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

Or if Windows gives you problems with permissions, try this way:

(1) In a My Computer or Windows Explorer window, open this folder:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

If that folder does not exist, then you are using 32-bit Windows, and you can open the following folder instead:

C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash

(Note: This folder exists on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, but on 64-bit Windows Firefox uses the Flash player in the SysWOW64 folder instead.)

(2) Check for a file named mms.cfg:

Note: If you do not see file extensions such as .ocx, .dll, .exe, and .cfg on the files in this folder, then Windows may be hiding these from you. In order to work with file names accurately, it is best to unhide the extensions. This Microsoft support article has the steps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219.

(A) If mms.cfg exists, drag it to your Documents folder where you can edit it without being bothered about administrator privileges

(B) If mms.cfg does not exist, open your Documents folder, right-click > New > Text File and name the new file mms.cfg

(3) Open mms.cfg from Documents into a text editor such as Notepad.

Add this on its own line (I put it last):

ProtectedMode=0

Save the file and close Notepad.

(4) Hold down the Ctrl key and drag the mms.cfg file back to the Flash folder to make a copy there, keeping the original in Documents

This change will take effect once the Flash plugin is completely unloaded, which may require exiting and restarting Firefox (allow a few minutes for all the Flash processes in memory to terminate after exiting Firefox).
