Can't rename bookmarks

more options

Hello, I'm using firefox 23.0 on linux, just tried to rename a bookmark and I have no "Properties" menu item anywhere and the textbox labeled "Name" in "Show all bookmarks" is grayed out for every single bookmark I have. Of course I also tried typing in the grayed out textbox and, as expected, it doesn't change. I've read several support webpages on this issue and every one points to those two obvious solutions but, in my firefox, they don't work (meaning, not a single context menu has a Properties option, neither the textbox in Show All Bookmarks allows me to type in anything). What's the deal with renaming bookmarks?

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Please report back soon.

You only see a Properties item if you right-click a bookmar in the Bookmarks sidebar or the Bookmarks Toolbar or the Bookmarks menu.
In the Bookmarks Manager (Library) you can make the change in the details pane at the bottom right (there is a More/Less to show more fields).

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Thank you, I tried restarting in safe mode but nothing changes. I receive the pop-up, I choose safe mode, but still can't see the properties in the context menus, neither can I type into the textbox to change the name (grayed out). I even tried invoking firefox with "sudo firefox", same thing.

Did you check this in the Library?

Note that you won't get the properties if you right-click a RSS feed item and you can't change those either in the Library.

Just tried safe-mode in another computer (running also Ubuntu), behavior is the same (textbox is grayed out). I'm gonna try a third one, but this starts to feel as an issue. Is anyone running firefox 23 being able to change bookmarked pages' names?

I found the problem. I was talking about bookmarks but I'm actually using "Most Visited" only. I presume they aren't the same (don't get same treatment). I don't use bookmarks, just History. Is there a way to change pages names in History items?

No, you can't make changes to history items unless you would drag (or copy/paste) them to a bookmarks folder.

You can use a SQLite editor to change the page title in the places.sqlite database, but it doesn't stick: the next time you load the page, the database will be updated to reflect the current page title.
