Firefox has picked up unwanted adware/malware

more options

Hi,

My Firefox has picked up some unwanted adware/malware that I am unable to find or kill. I am using Windows 7 Pro x64 and if you look at the Task Manager these unwanted processes show up with titles such as these:

1) Technology and Programming News 2) Celebrity Daily 3) Health Tube TV

All are prefixed with a Firefox logo and it is impossible to kill the process My anti-virus/malware software does not find it as it hides itself very well indeed.

Even if Firefox is NOT run after a re-boot this adware (for want of a better description) switches itself on to run in the background. This may take several minutes before activation though. No add-ons show up in the Firefox securtiy section.

Can you suggest how it can be defeated, removed altogether and prevented for re-occurring again please?

Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Dave

Chosen solution

Hi

I am sorry to hear that, but hopefully I can help.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista if you don't already have one. Windows 8/10 have antivirus protection built-in.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Hello,

Thank you for your help and pointing me to other free anti-malware/adware software. It was a good suggestion and is much appreciated. My anti-virus “AVG” could not find the offending software at all. However, I have finally managed to remove it.

Unfortunately the “Microsoft Safety Scanner” failed miserably, but a piece of software that I have used in the past came through for me and killed it. I am referring to the free version of “Malwarebytes” program - https://www.malwarebytes.com/

Once again, thank you for your help.

Regards,

Dave
