Firefox 9.0.1. suddenly started to crash after loading, approximately 20 seconds. I have tried to load in safe mode, turning off all plugins and extensions, delete cache, history, deleting and starting a new profile, cleaning .sqlite files, reinstall firefox. I've tried to use previous versions and a pack Antichrome 4 that doesnt require installation and saves profile and settings in its own folder. But everything ended up in the same result: shortly after starting up Firefox closed with a crash. It was crashing even at dialog windows such as starting options for safe mode or profile management, i.e. even before loading the main window. It doesn't crash sooner at any actions, just some time after the starting the application. I've checked for viruses and malware with AVG and Ad-aware and didn't notice anything suspicious that might affect the browser. Crash ID was received from a new profile on version 9.0.1., OS is Windows XP service pack 3.

Chosen solution

-> Check your Hard Disk for Errors

-> Do a MALWARE check with these Malware Scanning programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. Make sure that you UPDATE each program to get the latest version of their Databases before doing a Scan. Also, Close All other Applications (softwares) before Starting to Run Scans.

Check and tell if its working.

This guide is the first thing I have tried to perform. Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem, but thanks for your help.

Firefox crashes even before entering safemode, during its option selection screen, if I meddle. If I will act fast enough and start a safe mode or create a new profile, it will crash anyway, given 10-20 seconds. I have reinstalled firefox and created a fresh profile, resetting the options and removing the hardware acceleration feature.

Have been trying to research the problem for some time, I believe now that it's not the exclusive fault of Firefox, as Internet Explorer manages to crash as well in the same fashion. Yet Opera and Chrome keep working fine (even IE plugin in Chrome works). Expecting it to be some kind of rootkit, but haven't found anything suspicious either. So far I lost all clues to what might cause such strange behaviour, so it will probably be easier for me to just reinstall Windows.

Indeed, I have installed Malwarebytes' program and it found an additional threat (Hijack.LanmanServer, to be precise). After removing it crashing stopped happening both in IE and Firefox. I didn't take into account that the malware scanners complement each other and stopped thinking about possible malware after checking once with ad-aware and SAS.

Thank you for the help.
