Firefox only runs in compatibility mode

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit,

I have been running Firefox without any problems, however, today when using it it suddenly crashed and I was unable to start again.

It would display a menu with choices whether to run in safe-mode and some other options, but I would not be able to start in safe mode, because, while displaying the options, "windows is trying to solve the problem" message appears freezing firefox and the only way out is to end the program.

However, If I choose to launch firefox in compatibility mode with XP sp3, I can use it without any visible problems.

The only changes I've done is updating Java yesterday, but there weren't any issues right after the update.

How could I fix this?

/I need the latest Java to run some applications (chess in particular) that requires the latest version/

I don't have anything in the crash log from today

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox location bar (that's where you enter your website names) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the most recent 5 report IDs that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your forum response.

Thanks in advance for your help!

More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Did you try to disable all plugins in compatibility mode to see if that allows to start in regular mode?

You can also try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that works.

There's nothing from the past week in the crash logs.

However, the problem is now solved. I disabled Java updater process and removed it from startup. Soon after I was offered to install Firefox version 15. Then I tried to install it, but got a message that it is impossible to do because Firefox is still running and must be closed, that happened several times despite killing the process in task manager.

However in some time the installation managed to start and succeed. Afterwards I didn't have any issues running Firefox in normal mode.

I am unsure whether it was disabling Java updater or upgrading Firefox that solved the problem, but either way it's fixed and good.

Thank you guys for replying though.
