Why does Thunderbird 31 sometimes delete the Local Folders >Trash Folder when Empty Trash is called?

Perhaps every 4th or 5th time I use "Empty Trash" on the Trash, Local Folder, the entire folder name is removed from the list. Also wonder if there is any point in "Compacting" after "Empty Trash" ?

Check under View -> Folders if you have setup Thunderbird not to display All folders, but for instance only Recent folders. I can imagine that when there's no more messages in the trash, it won't count as a recent folder anymore...

As far as I know there's no need to compact your trash folder after emptying it. It will probably save space when you compact tour other folders, but you can configure Thunderbird to do so automatically when it makes enough of a difference. To do this go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network & Disk Space and check the settings under Disk Space.

Your suggestions sound reasonable - thanks.

Empty trash actually deletes the file Trash. If something interrupts that task like say an anti virus scan then the creation part of the exercise to create a new trash file might just not occur. I don't actually know. I am guessing, but timing its everything in Thunderbird
