Why am I getting pop ups in my chrome browser

I have safari and all is well with it. I had to download chrome for some of my apps to work. Now when I search using chrome I get these gosh awful pop ups from places like Amazon offering me $100 for stuff. I can’t close it or make it go away. I can’t even close the search window.
