Suddenly while browsing, I got a bar notification saying that some of my addons had been disabled because they were unsupported. Clicking the button took me to a page that showed no addons, but linked to a page for Legacy Addons in which I found 25 of my addons (That's literally all but 2) have been marked as "not verified for use in Firefox" and disabled, despite literally all of them working mere seconds again and a large majority of them being obtained directly from Mozilla's official addon website! Firefox didn't even receive an update or anything, they just all randomly got flagged out of nowhere for no reason. Why are all of my addons suddenly marked as unverified and disabled, and how can I enable them all again?

Mozilla has rolled-out a fix for this. The fix will be automatically applied in the background within the next few hours, you don’t need to take active steps.

In order to be able to provide this fix on short notice, they are using the Studies system. You can check if you have studies enabled

  1. Go to [=] > Options > Privacy & Security.
  2. Make sure Allow Firefox to install and run studies is check marked.

I you had it disabled, you can disable studies again after your add-ons have been re-enabled.

They are working on a general fix that doesn't need to rely on this and will keep you updated.

The Add-ons team is working on a fix for this. I don't know whether that will involve running an add-on update or something else. We're all hoping to learn soon.

I am so pissed about this that I'd like to spit nails. I hope Firefox gets this fixed soon, because I have to open my password keeper in a separate tab to use it. What in the heck happened? Nice to know you're working on it, but I'd like to know how it happened to begin with.

Thank you for the response I sincerely hope they come up with a solution for this soon, because it seems to have affected a LOT of users. I'm also curious as to how a mistake of this magnitude even happens in this first place. As much as Firefox is a good browser, it's nothing without working addons, and having to go without until this is solved is a major inconvenience.

It looks like a certificate used to sign many popular extensions expired. (The verification process checks that certificate.)

I don't know how soon re-signed versions of those extensions will become available, or whether another workaround will be discovered. We are all hoping to learn more soon.

more options

After going through what I would describe as troubleshooting hell, I will no longer be using FF after all these years.

Long story short, I was using FF56 Portable due to most of my addons being "legacy" ones (not to mention the now defunct Personas -- which I must have!) and it had gotten so bad that FF's UI mysteriously changed to that of FF60+ and no amount of refreshing, reinstalling, using Mozbackup, or even restarting my PC would fix the situation! I was willing to forgive Mozilla for killing Personas as long as my copy of FF could still use the addon, but not now. Not after what I went through!

I have switched over to Waterfox which is not having any issues whatsoever with FF's addons. So long Firefox!

more options

Just a note that official updates are expected to be posted here:

https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/certificate-issue-causing-add-ons-to-be-disabled-or-fail-to-install/39047

Currently, the only workaround is to set your system clock back (for example, if your date is May 3, set to May 2; if your date is May 4, set to May 3). You might have to reinstall extensions after that, or maybe Firefox will detect the difference at your next shut down/restart. Changing the date may have other consequences, so this option isn't ideal.

more options

I already tried changing the date. That was the first thing I did and it would not work! In my case, I was able to restore FF56 briefly with all addons working but as soon as I starting doing anything in FF, it froze up again and my addons got disabled and the UI changed to FF60+ version again. This time no amount of messing with FF would allow me to use it with ANY addons.

As I said earlier, I will be using Waterfox from now on since it appears to be more stable with addons. I am officially done with FF!

At first, I could not find Allow Firefox to install and run studies under Privacy and Security. This is located under Privacy & Security => Firefox Data Collection and Use => Allow Firefox to install and run studies.

This worked! My addons have been re-enabled. I did have to restart Firefox.

Thank you!

Does Firefox 56 Portable have the "Studies' feature? Possibly that is one of the differences between "Portable" and standard builds.

Yes it does. I have that checked and FF still froze and disabled my addons.

I made sure that studies is check marked but so far (2 hours) nothing has happened. I'm not sure if I[m supposed to leave my computer running all night, but that's not going to happen, as I turn off the modem at night.

Uninstalled FF56 Portable and did a clean install of the regular version of FF56. Then added your code and this addon Hotfix-update-xpi-intermediate 1.0.2. Half my addons were still disabled, but I attempted to re-download them and now they are back to normal!

[Edit] That didn't work with FF56 Portable, but the odd thing is that when I copied the profile of the regular FF56 into the profile folder for FF56 Portable, everything was back to normal on FF56 Portable. So far, so good. No freezing or disabling of addons as of this typing.
