The FireFox plugincheck says I have outdated “Java Runtime Environment NPRuntime Script Plug-in Library for Java(TM) Deploy” and “Next Generation Java Plug-in 10.51.2 for Mozilla browsers” both version 10.51.2.13. I attempted to update the first and java.com said I needed environment 8 update 40 which I proceeded to install. After that appeared to complete, a offer to install a search app by Ask was made and I cancelled it. I was ask Are you sure you want to cancel this Java installation? I said yes meaning cancel the Ask application. After restarting the computer, plugincheck sees no change in Java. This may be similar to another problem when I attempted to update Adobe Flash Player a second time because plugincheck said it was out of date only to be told that I already had the version that I was attempting to install. What plugincheck says I have has not changed as I make updates. Here is a screen shot of waht it shows

I've very recently done this Java 8 update 40 exercise and it is a bit confusing but jscher is correct. Do it again and make sure the two boxes on the Ask page are unchecked. You are better off without Ask in my experience and this reflects poorly on Java. If any reader thinks this is a bit harsh, Google "Ask Toolbar".

In the Java installation dialogs, when you come of the Ask offer, you should be able to find one or two checkboxes to deselect those products and prevent them from installing. I think you might need to try that first before checking your Java version again.

The Flash plugins are a bit confusing because RealDownloader apparently added a variant called "PepperFlash" which is the one that is out of date. Can you find that one on the Add-ons page, Plugins section, and set it to "Never Activate"? Or if it's important, you may need an update from Real. If the plugin check site doesn't link you to Real, you may need to go to real.com or wherever you found it before.

The install I cancelled was specificly titled (substantially) search app by Ask not the whole instalation. There were 2 check boxes but once both were checked there would be nothing to install. It is the environment 8 update 40 that I ask for and downloaded. The plugincheck acts like I did not get it installed.

the tital to the box is "offer to install the search app by ask" and it does have 2 check boxes then some explanation below that which showes that the tital is wrong and it is realy to install Java! I uncxhecked the boxes and cliocked the install. It did start but ended with a box blank except for a yellow triangle with ! in it. This is about the 4th time I did the online download and the second install file is never saved. Now when I have the chance I will get the ofline install file. The initial prpoblem is solved.
