For no reason that I can see, a pinterest "save" button has started to appear in the upper left hand corner of images in my Firefox browser. I have not loaded an extension or add-on, and I can find nothing to "disable" under Tools.

Any suggestions?

Gregory

Is this in IOS? or desktop? If it's on iOS did you recently install the Pinterest app maybe?

Is this happening on all images or only certain ones from certain sites?

Certain sites, I've seen it mainly on fashion and auto sites, some on Flickr (only lately), but not on music sites (like Pitchfork) or the NYT.

Weird. Like there's a normal anymore.

Hi Gregory, just for the record, the MacBook Air runs MacOS. (iOS is the system on iPhones and iPads.)

If you haven't already, please do take a look at your add-ons to see whether you've acquired anything related to Pinterest or social sharing in general. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything relevant, or suspicious, or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

Another possibility is that you were previously blocking the site's social sharing buttons, but somehow that has become ineffective for the Pinterest button. For example, maybe an ad blocking extension isn't working quite the same as it did before.
