Firefox suggests completely random sites in URL bar despite privacy settings tuned to only suggest from history, fresh install

I've just noticed that when I type in the URL bar it's suggesting seemingly random sites despite them not being present in my history (or bookmarks, completely fresh Firefox install as after several years it's still quicker to reinstall than to clear history) AND I've specifically checked the setting under privacy to only suggest sites from my history. Is there any way to turn this off? I haven't been to etsy in years and I have no wish to visit the site right now, but it still insists on suggesting it to me whenever I type the letter e in my URL bar.

You can set browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete to false to remove the Visit page suggestion from the location bar drop down list.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

The location bar drop-down list can show history items, bookmarked pages, pages opened in tabs, and search suggestions. You can set what suggestions show when you enter an URL in the location/address bar bar via "Options/Preferences > Privacy" (about:preferences#privacy).

  • Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest:
    History
    Bookmarks
    Open tabs

Search suggestions can be enabled and disabled via "Options/Preferences > Search" (about:preferences#search)

Thanks for your attempt to help but this just makes me more confused as not only, as stated in the original question, are my privacy settings set to only suggest from history but my search settings are already set to not show search suggestions in the location bar. How do I turn this off when two separate settings are already set to prevent it from happening?

Same here. Still waiting for an answer from my post a few days ago.

After every update I have to battle my way through about:config to get these idiot "suggestions" and history from popping up, but in this last update (43.0.4) it simply will not stop no matter what it's been told to do.

It's like it's an obsession with this browser now to have sh*t (private sh*t) popping up, down or out of anywhere it can now.

Cool...so I guess "Start Firefox in Safe Mode" isn't applicable here so there won't be any answers.
