I have been using Aurora for several years with Windows 7 pro 64 Bit with the last two major updates 28/29 Auroa just vanished from my desktop after clicking on the desktop icon, I tried to uninstall but the system told me that I still had Aroura running so to uninstall I had to restart my PC then I could uninstall, I then re-installed Aurora and an pinned icon appeared in the task bar but when I clicked on the desktop icon the hour glass rotated but no Aroura started up on the desktop, so I went through the whole thing again and uninstalled Aurora and installed Firefox V26 and now this has progressed to the latest version this has too vanished in exactly the same way.

What can I do so I can use Aroura again as it's very good and safe to use?

I cannot use the trouble shooting info as I cannot see Aurora/Firefox to be able to view or copy/paste the info shown.

Hm, weird. I am using Aurora at the moment and this shouldn't happen. But every case is different. I am also running Win7 pro 64bit, Can you go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Aurora and try to run firefox.exe? Does it start up?

If not, Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if Firefox starts up.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

To check if Aurora is running, in Task manager, click the Processes tab then find firefox.exe and end process.

Do you find firefox.exe? Also try this. Press Windows key + R and type firefox /safe does it open?

Do you get the Safe Mode startup window if you first end (kill) all Firefox instances in the task manager and then start Aurora by holding down the Shift key while double-clicking the Aurora desktop shortcut?

yes I have tried that and Aroura opens up on the desktop and I can see web pages.

Can you start Aurora in normal mode if you disable all extensions and use the default theme and possibly disable hardware acceleration?

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected
