I'm suspicious about a notice of an available Firefox upgrade. Is there any way to confirm that I downloaded a true copy?

The details are hazy because, after downloading a "latest Firefox update", my Windows XP Pro installation went crazy. I was unable to access the Internet; my system "hung" (became unresponsive to everything); and, after tripping poweroff or restart buttons, would not boot to any usable state but Safe Mode.

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

I upgraded (?) to the latest version of Firefox (3.64, I think)

Hi gator, Where did you see the update notice? -Taddle

Taddle,

A window popped up. I think it was when I opened Firefox, though, with the passage of time, I can't accurately recall whether that was the case or if it popped up when I connected to the Internet. My only clear recollection is that, when I clicked on the "Upgrade" button, I remember thinking, "That Firefox image looks a bit fuzzy.

Since there's no downloaded upgrade file, there's no way to compare a checksum with the original file. Is there any other way to test whether the upgrade is genuine? I guess that's a question for the developers.

Have you received reports of Firefox 3.6.x not "playing well" with avast! 5.0 anti-virus? avast! 5.0 seems to cause other problems on my system.
