When I attempted the first time to restore bookmarks using Firefox backups (Bookmarks/Backup Restore), a list of Firefox backups appeared, I chose the most recent, and but the command failed without an error message--no backup restored.

I tried again this time intending to use an older manual backup. From this point on the Backup Restore command does not appear as an option after clicking Bookmarks. Double clicking the backup file also doesn't do anything.

I am running under Windows 8.1.

The error and the task integrity is definitely pointing to some error with accessing the bookmarks file.

If renaming doesn't work, try restarting as well. If that fails, then I'd suggest running a disk checking scan to check your disk for possible issues.

Unless it is likely you've got another program that accesses the bookmarks (I don't know of any off hand though).

Hi,

Was it just bookmarks that you lost, or do you loose more, like history, passwords etc?

If it was just bookmarks, then try this:

  • Go to Help -> Troubleshooting Information
  • Scroll down the page to find the "Places Database" section (it is near the bottom).
  • Click the "Verify Integrity" button, this may take a few seconds to run.
  • Copy the output and paste it here.
  • Restart Firefox and try again, to see if this helps.

If that doesn't help, can you provide a screenshot of the area in which you're expecting the restore function to be? I'm slightly unclear where you are indicating.

This is what the verify process reported:

> Task: checkIntegrity - Unable to check database integrity > Task: invalidateCaches - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: checkCoherence - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: expire - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: vacuum - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: stats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: _refreshUI - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

I may have bigger problems. There is another error when I initiate Fire Fox. There is a red banner that says a file is opened by another program that may make bookmarks not work. I went to the support answer for that problem and followed the directions to rename the bookmarks file to old, restart and run Fire Fox again to create a new one. That fix did not work--still got the error first time running Firefox. But now other things are going wrong as well. I can't even seem to install Chrome to use it instead. Thank you for your help, but I am going to close this support question as being perhaps not the entire problem.

Yes, by the time you replied again, all kinds of caca in other areas of my PC software had occurred. It is under the tender care of the Geek Squad. I hope for the best. Thanks for the time you took to answer. Sharon
