I have tried now with several versions, but I can't get Firefox to open a second time after installation. It opens when I finish the install, but hangs on open after that. I can see the firefox.exe file running in Task Manager, but no window ever pops up. Occasionally a reboot fixes this, but not this time. I have tried versions 43, 44, and 45 beta. All exhibit the same behavior.

The Firefox window may be opening outside your view.

Right click on the icon and select Open New Tab. Sometimes this works. If it opens, close it by Menu > File > Exit.

I don't get the icon showing as open in the task bar. I can see the process running in task manager. I also just figured out it is only not working in my profile. If I log into another windows profile, it loads fine.

I have renamed the Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox folder in my Users profile, but that didn't help.

I am running WIndows 7 btw. So I should see the FIrefox box in the task bar, to do what you asked. I am not getting any indication that its running any further then initial startup, but never loading a GUI. I am not getting any windows error logs, or any error windows.
