Clicking on some links causes endless tabs flying by but not opening.

FF is my browser -- has been for years, and I love it. However, in the last year or so every so often I click on a link in some webpage, and instead of that new tab opening, tabs fly by at a machine-gun pace, none of which pause to open, and it will not stop until I close the browser, use CCleaner to clean out the logjam, then open the browser again. At that point I cannot try again because it will keep throwing new attempts forever. This seems to be happening more often, and I'd really like to know how to stop it. Thanks very much.

A year! I'm amazed you didn't post before.

The most common reason for this is at some point, you got a download dialog (Open/Save/Cancel) for some kind of content Firefox won't open, but you wanted to see it in Firefox so you told Firefox to use firefox.exe to open it. After that, every time you came across that kind of content again, well, as the help article title says: "Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link." Please try the workaround there and see whether that helps.
