I'm trying to disable an imap email account that is in Thunderbird and not have new messages download until I enable it again. All of the support answers I've found dating back to 2018 suggest unclicking the (now famous) 3 checkboxes in server settings. I did that, and unfortunately it keeps right on downloading new emails and synchronizing folders under that inbox.

So, the checkboxes aren't enough, what else can I do?

thanks, Robert

You could change spelling of incoming server to so that it doesn't work, such as add XXX to the end. Would require a restart with no access to the messages, but account would be paused.

Create a separate profile for the account, but make it so it's not the default profile. Help/Troubleshooting Info, about:profiles, to create and launch profiles. When TB starts in the default profile (which has the 'disabled' account removed), the second profile can be launched manually from about:profiles without closing the default profile. There is also an add-on.

My suggestion is 'quicker', but @sfhowes' suggestion is far superior, especially if you anticipate pausing the account periodically. Thanks, @sfhowes. :)
