After I click View/Full Screen on the Firefox menu bar, I lose the main FF Menu bar. When I hit the esc key, the screen remains locked in full screen view mode. Then I have to reboot my computer to get back to the default FF menu and display mode.

Why doesn't the esc key work the way it works when I'm viewing videos in full screen mode?

Pointing the mouse at the top of the screen should reveal a tool bar. On the right end there is a button to return to the normal view

Doesn't work.

My MacBookPro F11 key on a Mac Leopard system decreases volume control. That key has nothing to do with screen display functions.

I still have to reboot my computer to get back to regular menu controls and screen displays after clicking FF menu View/Full Screen Display.

Just noticed that the F3 key will display the Apple dock controls which allows me to shut down Firefox and re-launch it to get back to the default screen display.

By following this procedure, I don't have to re-boot my computer to get to essential controls.

I hope Mozilla fixes this so the esc key will restore the default screen display.

That key combination displays my desktop, but I still have to close and re-open Firefox to get the Firefox default screen back.

Still think Firefox should change their browser so the esc key will send me back to the regular default Firefox screen.

When I play full screen videos the esc key allows me to escape back to the previous display or default screen.

Thank you for your response. Sorry I'm not entertaining this as a good solution. I'm technologically challenged to remember complex key combinations to do basic functions.

I continue to wonder why Firefox doesn't fix this so the esc key does the job like the industry standard in shifting back from a full screen display to a basic control screen.

I don't know why it is so difficult to exit fullscreen mode on mac.

On Windows it's F11 -> good for me.

But Escape is not the best solution, because ever since Escape is the button to stop a loading page.

Will try to find out more.

I hope Mozilla gives you more direct support in resolving this matter.

Good luck!

Thank you. Yes, this procedure did solve the problem, but I still prefer the standard of hitting the esc key to get back my toolbars and default viewing screen that most full screen video on demand websites provide.

Firefox's solution is novel, inefficient and not very intuitive, especially after positioning the mouse in a unique location to find that tiny righthand corner button to get back to my default viewing screen. Esoteric and not very user friendly.

I have a PC and pointing the cursor at the upper right-hand corner when I'm in fullscreen produces nothing. I can see something up there, but it's on full screen and I can't do anything with Mozilla Firefox now. There's absolutely no way to get back to normal view. Not F11, not Fn F11, not esc, not even rebooting. Aargh.

you fixed something that wasn't broken. it is too easy to use the esc key, why change it & not give notice of the change.

Same problem as cvohl. Menu, Navigation, Bookmarks Toolbars all disappeared. Even the Start button at the bottom of the screen is gone. I still had my tabs, though. F11 key does NOTHING now. Bumping the cursor at the top of the page does NOTHING. Turning the computer off & back on does NOTHING. I already had this FF page open (trying to get the F11 key to work).Thank the cybergods that the Navigation Bar spontaneously reappeared, but the other toolbars are still gone.

This is an insanely disfunctional 'improvement.' Goodbye Firefox!~

How is 3 keys a "complex key combination"? Have you never done Control, Alt, Delete? When you first posted, you didn't state that you were using a Mac. Then you complain that the answer doesn't work. Suppose that's the difference between having a Mac owner and a PC owner.

I have Firefox 3.6.17 on a Mac Mini OSX PPC 10.4.11 and positraction's solution above works fine for me:

""Pointing the mouse at the top of the screen should reveal a tool bar. On the right end there is a button to return to the normal view."

yamakud's solution also works fine:

"CMD + Shift + F on Mac "

F11 is not a good solution either (apart from the fact that it doesn’t work on Mac). I don’t want to remember any numbers for exiting full screen mode. Cmd-Shift F is easier to remember, even though it’s 3 keys, as it’s a command (Cmd) for full screen (F). And Shift because Cmd-F is already occupied by "Find",

Still, I would prefer that the ESC key would end full screen mode like in all other programs.
