Every time I open Firefox a dialogue box pops up asking if I give permission for this program to change my computer.

It only started doing this recently. As well, the close, minimize, and maximize buttons in the top right are blacked out.

A possible cause of this error is that Firefox is set to run as Administrator. Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.

Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator. Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties". Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

  • Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
  • "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected

Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

Thanks for the suggestion. I made those changes but now Firefox won't open at all.

Try to run the Firefox program once as Administrator (right-click: Run as Administrator).

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

Thanks again for your suggestion. I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and it still won't launch.

Did you remove the Firefox program folder before re-installing the Firefox?

I did. I tried the whole sequence all the way through twice and no luck.
