Synchronisation between Outlook and Thunderbird

I have a Gmail account, and use Thunderbird to access my e-mails, because I like its presentation and functionality. However, as an emergency back-up e-mail address, for use if ever I have problems with Gmail, I have set up an Outlook account. A while ago now, I linked this account to Thunderbird, so that it's available to me easily, should I ever need it. I've successfully synchronised my Outlook account, insofar as it receives all my Gmail traffic. However, it is not synchronised to the extent of mirroring my folders, so that all incoming traffic appears in my Outlook inbox. Whereas my Gmail account has a reasonable 30-odd messages in its inbox, my Outlook inbox (in both Thunderbird and the internet version) has over 4,000, including many messages that I have deleted in Gmail. I know that there are instructions on the internet about syncing inboxes, but I'm not very computer literate and afraid of accidentally imposing the chaos of my Outlook account on Gmail, instead of the other way around! One solution, I suppose, would be simply to sever the link between Thunderbird and Outlook - and maybe doing so would reduce the frequency with which I now get "compacting" reminders in Thunderbird. However, it's not immediately obvious to me how to do this. Any advice on synchronisation or de-linking my Outlook account - in simple, non-technical language - would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply, Matt. You're right, I do need to rethink this. I've realised that keeping both Gmail & Outlook visible in Thunderbird is unnecessary. I'm simply going to remove Outlook from Thunderbird, and have it available to me online, should I ever need it. Thanks again.

Non technical answer. folders will only ever be replicated in IMAP mail clients. Outlook.com like Gmail.com is not a mail client.

So if you want the folders to be the same you will need the email address to be the same. not a forwarded gmail or a collected mail from gmail situation.

I think you need to rethink your backup. Beginning with what you are trying to achieve.
