Think I found it....hardware acceleration seems to be the problem. In windows 7 there is no tool tab... just options, which threw me for awhile. Thanks for your patience and help.

Hi mssnyder1

Can you check it in safe mode? start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while starting Firefox and select Start in Safe Mode.

thank you

Yes and I am presently in safe mode....what's next?

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

It opens in safe mode. Deleted all the rules from permissions list. Did not see plug in container. Using Norton Security suite via comcast. I disabled the antivirus program and firewall....still not responding. Also before this lastest problem I would also get "firefox already open" problem when clicking on the icon.

If it does work in Firefox Safe-mode then disable all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

In Safe mode the extensions are disabled already. When I enable one at a time it is still non-responsive. By the way I don't see where tools is an option. I hit the add-on tab to get to the extensions.
