It was working and it did some upgrades and it allows me to send emails, but after a few days I noticed when someone complained I hadn't responded to my email that I wasn't getting any. I checked my isp with webmail and sure enough there were 13 emails sitting there. I never saw any error messages and mea culpa I hadn't paid any attention to the little text bar on the bottom left of the main screen believing if I had an email it would be in my inbox. Failing to retrieve it had never previously a problem. I checked the tools/error console and found a bunch of gooblygook about some file not existing and line 124 errors. Googling that I learned a 124 bug was fixed in Thunderbird 30. So I tried that. No luck. The line 124 error is NOT gone but a bunch of new error stuff now also exists. Of course nothing about any of the error messages or what to do about them is found in the 'Thunderbird help' files. The number of emails sitting in my ISP has grown but Webmail by browser seems to be the only way to view them so far. When I click on get messages, in the bottom left screen, Thunderbird connects to my isp, it sees the emails, announces that is commencing download of X# of emails (30 today), but does nothing and after a few minutes that information also disappears. My machine is a 32 bit Compaq tower type XP (SP3). The error messages in tools/error console are; Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/chrome.manifest'.

Things I have tried without success. Closing Thunderbird, then deleting it from my C:\Program files, then clearing all caches and temp folders, rebooting and reinstalling Thunderbird.

Closing Thunderbird and deleting the Db-sql file in the mail folder buried in Documents and Applications then restarting Thunderbird.

I have no add on files that could be interfering.

I have even tried disabling my anti virus before attempting to start Thunderbird (which is a really, really dumb thing to try), but still Thunderbird just sits there and lies about retrieving my email and does nothing.

What is the fix?

errors in the error console are mostly junk. To the point that you have to clear it try the action and then decide if anything that appears looks like it might be relevant.

I actually think you might have been on the right track with the anti virus.

To that end, try restarting the operating system in safe mode with networking. and then try geting your mail.

If that works you were on the right track. If it does not, moving right along.

Who is your mail provider.? Please copy and paste the troubleshooting information from the Help menu to a message here so we can check your settings.
