I have a brand new mac and I cannot read comments on wsj or cnn w/firefox. The little bar keeps going in circles like its trying to load. I have this same problem on my pc at work for wsj only.

I cleared the cookies for wsj.com. This works until I log into wsj.com and then I cannot read the comments. I need to log in to read the articles.

Thank you.

WSJ uses LiveFyre for comments. Another user reported that his work proxy blocks this server, but since you can access the comments logged out, it's hard to understand why it would be blocked when you are logged in.

Is there a protocol difference (http vs. https)? If it's a secure page when you are logged in, do you notice any mixed content notifications on the address bar (e.g., shield icon, gray ! triangle, to the left of the address)?

As an inconvenient temporary workaround, you can use a private window to simultaneously view the site "logged out" since your regular window cookies do not cross over to the private window.

CNN uses Disqus and those comments are not loading for me at the moment. This could be due to using NoScript (blocking something needed to show the comments). I haven't tested in a clean profile.

You can open the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer). Check on the Network tab if any content is blocked and has a file size 0 (zero).

This issue can be caused by corrupted cookies or cookies that are blocked.

  • check the permissions on the about:permissions page and in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"

If clearing cookies didn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookies files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
