Can the URL bar be used like it was before?

How do I make it so that when I search with my address bar it ALWAYS uses Google, regardless of what search engine is selected in the search bar? It used to be like this, but a recent Firefox update altered it. Now, when I search with my address bar it uses the search engine selected in the search bar...if I wanted to do that, I would just use the search bar! Any suggestions?

I think this changed quite a while ago, in Firefox 23 (Summer 2013). Have you been using a workaround since then -- maybe this extension:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/keyword-search/

If you used Firefox's Reset feature, you probably lost the extension and need to reinstall it.

Note: After installing the extension, use its Options panel to adjust its behavior. You can access that from the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then look for Keyword Search and click its Options button.
