The search button was blue and clicking it took me direct to google search page, it now only show the dropdown list.
When I clicked the little bLUE circle in 'Search', up came a Google Page, (often with moving pictures) and a bar where I could enter my search details. Now, suddenly, the little search magifing glass is colourless and not blue and clicking it just brings down a tiny list of options. How can I resatore the foremer.
Many thanks and a Hppy New Year!

Thank you!
The search button was orinally blue as shown in Cap9 and when clicked took me direct to the Google Search Page. The uncoloured versison Cap8 just gives a tiny dropdown box. I suspect an Addon is needed ?
Are you talking about the star? That is the Bookmark Creator.
PS the picture on the right has errors.
It might be that an extension is causing the search engine icon to change to blue. I haven't seen this happen with the current one-off search engine feature.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
The one on the left, a magnifying glass with a blank center, is the normal one in Firefox 34 and newer.
If you want to have a one-click way to get to your default search site, you could check out the approach in this thread: Search Bar : "Go button only appears when text in the bar" (forces the arrow on the right side of the search bar to appear even when there's no text in the box).
You may find these add-ons useful;
Add to Search Bar {web link} Make any pages' search functionality available in the Search Bar
Settings Guard for Firefox {web link} Detects and resets changes to settings that are frequently done by add-ons and application installers.
Context Search {web link} Expands the context menu's 'Search for' item into a list of installed search engines, allowing you to choose the engine you want to use for each search.
Book mark this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
SearchThisSite {web link} Allows you to search the website currently viewed with the website's internal search engine (and not the default FF search engine or an external engine)
