it says that video dowloader helper isn't compatible with this version firefox when the add on simply states version 36 or higher

It sounds like you were trying to install a Extension made for desktop Firefox (on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux) and not from Android section.
The Extensions for Android Firefox are listed in https://addons.mozilla.org/android/ as you change section on top where it says Other Applications.
