When sending a large file that is linked through fropbox, why does thunderbird still attaches the original file
Why does this failure occur?
When I attach one or many large files and the link option is present. When the link option is selected the large files are uploaded to the dropbox account.
Then hitting send results in a warning that I am trying to send large files. I select Ok to continue and the system will still attach the large file and try to send it which results in a failure/rejection from the SMTP server.
One noted issue, sometimes if there is only 1 large file (in my test case a JPG 4.5MB) the email is sent. When I have 2 or 3 or 10 the send email fails every time..

The whole idea of using Filelink is to upload the large attachment to e.g. Dropbox, and only put a link to the file into the message body. Make sure there is no large file attached to the message, and that the link to the large file has been inserted into the message body. Normally this happens automatically.
Not the right answer..
The large attachment(s) is (are) dragged into the address area which opens the TB attachment pane, the option to link pops up below and if accepted/selected, TB starts uploading the file to dropbox. The upload process is visible in the attachment window.
When the upload is finished the dropbox icon appears next to the uploaded file in the TB attachment window and links are inserted into the email to the dropbox file location.
Then on selecting "send", TB will load the attached file and send it which is wrong, it should only send the email with the links...!!!!!!
If the file is deleted from the attachment window it will also be deleted from the dropbox location making the link that was dropped into the email obsolete.
