Mac OSX 10.13, FireFox 115.1.0esr (64-bit): previously cmd-click on link would open in new background tab. Now it opens the link in BOTH current tab and a new background tab. This has started occurring in the last few days (mid Aug 2023). This is especially a problem when viewing CraigsList where it was very helpful to be able to cmd-click on links of no interest to mark them as "read" while remaining on the main list page. Now it is necessary to back up to previous page (main list) after clicking on each link... Is this perhaps a recent change (I had auto-update turned on)?

Does it still happen in Troubleshoot Mode?
Yes it does.
Does it still happen in a new profile? An easy way to test a new profile is to install Developer Edition and see if it happens there or refresh your existing profile.
Refresh did not change results. With further testing it seems specific to CraigsList, e.g., https://nh.craigslist.org/search/tla#search=1~list~0~0. At other websites it works correctly, i.e., cmd-click on link opens link in new background tab and original tab stays on the source of the link. I don't know enough about HTML to suggest what change they might have made that would change FireFox's behavior.
Definitely a site issue, on Chromium the new tab is blocked by the popup blocker.
Some workarounds:
- Middle-click link.
- Right-click link > Open Link in New Tab.
- Drag link into the tab bar.
