I think this MIGHT be my problem. It shows it's set for windows XP but cannot change it (or may be not). When I right clicked on the desktop shortcut for Firefox, it showed a menu for troubleshooting, and when going to compatibility mode it showed for Windows XP. Now when I try to do the same, nothing opens with a right click. Firefox is slow and stops constantly, does not respond to keystrokes or mouse. This problem started about a week ago.

If you can't change the compatibility settings in the current Firefox desktop shortcut then try to delete that shortcut and create a new shortcut via the Firefox.exe file in the Firefox program folder.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode. You can open the Properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and check the "Compatibility" tab. Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
