After recently upgrading to Windows 10, Thunderbird frequently crashes especially upon deletions but also on other functions like move to other folders. I've had the same crashing problem with all of the Thunderbird versions in the 45 series. While I hope Mozilla will be able to release an update that will fix this crashing problem. In the meantime, I hope you can recommend an earlier Thunderbird version that I can download and install that will not keep crashing under Windows 10.

The above posting was my best effort to comply with the request above of Wayne Mery to submit crash ID. The web site he referred me to in his posting was very confusing to me. I hope the information I posted will be helpful because the Thunderbird crashing problem is so consistent and troublesome that I have switched to using the Comcast email client even though I mush prefer Thunderbird.

That shows 5 crashes from 2015. Nothing since.

Are your seeing the mozilla crash reporter and submitting the crash reports? Or is it the windows crash reporter. The report from one goes to mozilla, the other go to Microsoft and we never see them.

The list you provided indicates Thunderbird has not crashed. So what you are describing is something other than a crash.

First of all, I thank both Wayne & Matt for their sincere efforts to help me resolve my Thunderbird problem. Their two messages above have caused me to conclude that I'm not using appropriate nomenclature to describe my problem.

My problem is that, when I try to either try to delete an inbox email or move it to a different folder, Thunderbird freezes up and I get a message in parenthesis at the top of my screen when I'm using my inbox that Thunderbird is "not responding" and none of the buttons work and the screen grays out and I have to reboot Thunderbird to get it to work again.

I've called that a "crash" but I infer from your messages above that it's not a crash in correct technical terminology. When that "not responding" freeze up occurred, I'd try to close Thunderbird by clicking on the "X" in the upper right corner. I'd get a pop-up asking if I wanted to close the program or wait until it finished what it was doing. Since I had waited many times to no avail, I'd click on the close program option.

I followed Wayne's instructions a ran Thunderbird in safe mode. I had more than 30 emails in my in box. I either deleted them or moved them to other folders. Thunderbird behaved perfectly and I did not get a "not responding" message and Thunderbird did not freeze up on me.

I then rebooted out of safe mode and tried to use Thunderbird for three inbox emails I had not deleted or moved while in safe mode. I was able to move the first email from the inbox to a folder with no problem. When I tried to move the second inbox email to a different folder, Thunderbird stopped working and I got the dreaded "not working" message at the top of the screen. After a wait, the email message moved from the inbox to the desired folder.

I do not want to have to always use Thunderbird in safe mode and I hope you can recommend a fix so I can enjoy the use of Thunderbird without these frequent "not responding" freezes the way I had been able to do while using Windows 7 before I updated to Windows 10.

Running Thunderbird in its safe mode would temporarily disable add-ons and other features such as graphics hardware acceleration. So we can surmise that one of these is causing your troubles.

Hardware acceleration can be turned off and on via a setting under Tools|Options - I can't remember exactly where.

For addons, I'd restart Thunderbird normally, then go into Tools|Add-ons, disable them all manually, then re-enable them one by one until the misbehaviour re-appears. Logically, the last one you re-enabled is the culprit.

The Lightning calendar is known to have been related to slowness. If you don't use it, that would be my first candidate for removal. But your listing doesn't show it, so the "show password" one ĺooks like a good bet. I have used adblock myself and don't see any freezing.

Thanks all! Zenos' suggestion enabled me to repair my problem. I did two things. (1) I turned off two items "hardware acceleration" & "enable global search & indexer" under "advanced configuration" in "advanced options." (2) I disabled the two "extensions" in "add-ons" - "Adblock Plus" and "Show Password on Input."

I suggest you re-enable those, one by one, and see if you can identify which one is the cause of the freezing.

Zenos, I'm going to hold off on your suggestion. The functions I disabled had virtually no value to me - except for the ad blocker add-on - so I prefer not to fiddle around as long as Thunderbird continues to be stable. Wish me luck.

Bad news! I'm running Thunderbird v.45.1.1 and continuing to experience freezing on trying to delete and email from the in box using the "delete" button on the toolbar. I've tried to left click and hold the email and move it to the "trash" folder and that works without freezing. At times, when I click on the "x" in the upper right corner to close Thunderbird and I click on "wait for the program to finish" it does complete the deletion after a short wait but there are other times when it doesn't delete but just keeps being frozen with a "not responding" notation at the top of gthe screen.

I turned off two items "hardware acceleration" & "enable global search & indexer" under "advanced configuration" in "advanced options" and I have deleted all the "extensions" in "add-ons." Any suggestions for how to get the "delete" button to work without freezing Thunderbird.

Long shot here but do you happen to have an older spinning traditional hard drive and / or low ram on this machine?

Both of those situations can cause / exacerbate any hanging or lack of responsiveness in any program not just Thunderbird.

Right click the deleted/Trash folder and select properties. How large is it on disk? Same for the folder you are deleting from.

Both "In box" and "Trash" folder properties are shown as "0" when the folders are empty. I clicked on the "repair" button as a further precaution.

My PC is a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with an Intel Core i7 processor and 16 MB RAM (maxed out) and an ATI Radeon HD 5450 display card. The RAID array and the video card were installed new 12/14 due to failing hard drive problems.

My C:/ drive(s) is/are old fashioned spinning hard drives in a RAID array because I've had hard disk failures that caused me much grief. I upgraded from windows 7 to Windows 10 a couple weeks ago.

Thunderbird seems to be behaving right now so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

HELP! I've tried all the suggestions above but Thunderbird (using v.45.0) keeps freezing up on attempts to delete messages from the inbox even in safe mode. Updates to the latest beta releases are of no help.

I assume I have a damaged or compromised Thunderbird. I'd like to be able to save my address book and thoroughly uninstall Thunderbird and try to effect a clean install.

Can I do that? If yes, please tell me how to do it.

I would first try Windows AND Thundrebird together in safe mode.

This is an interesting exchange. I am being dragged, kicking and screaming, into using Windows 10, and have been looking for a mail client that will run with it. I don't want to use Outlook, and my ol' favorite, Windows Live Mail, has issues similar to what's reported here with Thunderbird, even though it's a Microsoft product.

This prompts a general-information question as well. I first went to the mozilla-dot-org site to get answers, but it talks about nothing but Firefox. I actually had to use a search engine to get to this site. Is Thunderbird not a program that Mozilla is proud of? I have also heard rumors that Thunderbird does not have as big a support base and a user following as it once did, and would really like someone to comment on this perception. The Rascals in Redmond give us fewer and fewer options, taking greater and greater control over what we do. Yeah, I know, there's Mac and Linux, but those don't run the programs that my livelihood depends on. What to do, what to do.
